Adjusting Audio Input in Zoom

Overview

If participants in a Zoom meeting cannot hear you, the issue is typically related to your microphone selection, input level, device permissions, or hardware connection. This guide walks through how to properly adjust and troubleshoot your audio input settings in Zoom.

Common Symptoms

  • Others cannot hear you in a Zoom meeting
  • Microphone icon shows muted
  • Audio cuts in and out
  • Very low volume
  • Wrong microphone is selected

Step 1: Make Sure You’re Not Muted

  1. In the Zoom meeting window, check the bottom-left corner.
  2. If the microphone icon has a red slash, click Unmute.
  3. You can also hold the Spacebar temporarily to talk (if push-to-talk is enabled).

Step 2: Set MacBook Microphone in Zoom

  1. In the Zoom meeting window, click the arrow (^) next to the Microphone icon.
  2. Under Select a Microphone, choose:

    MacBook Microphone

(May appear as “MacBook Air Microphone” or “MacBook Pro Microphone”)

  3. Speak and confirm the green input level bar moves.

If the bar does not move, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Check Zoom Audio Settings

  1. Click the arrow (^) next to the Microphone icon.
  2. Select Audio Settings.

    Under Microphone:

    • Confirm MacBook Microphone is selected.
    • Ensure the input level bar moves when you speak.
    • Enable Automatically adjust microphone volume (recommended).
    • If disabled, manually increase the volume slider.
  3. Click Test Mic and confirm playback works.

Step 4: Check MacBook Microphone Permissions

Sometimes Zoom does not have permission to access your microphone.

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security.
  3. Click Microphone.
  4. Ensure Zoom is toggled ON.
  5. If you turn it on, close and reopen Zoom.

Step 5: Check Mac Sound Input Settings

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Go to Sound.
  3. Click the Input tab.
  4. Select MacBook Microphone.
  5. Speak and confirm the input level meter responds.
  6. Increase the input volume slider if needed.

If the input meter does not respond, restart your MacBook.

Step 6: Restart Zoom or MacBook

If issues persist:

  1. Quit Zoom completely.
  2. Reopen and test again.
  3. Restart your MacBook if needed.

Common Causes

  • External headset overriding MacBook mic
  • Bluetooth device connected but not selected
  • Zoom missing microphone permissions
  • Low input volume in system settings

Best Practice Recommendation

If no external headset is required, use:

MacBook Microphone + Built-in Speakers (or AirPods if needed)

Avoid having multiple audio devices connected during meetings to prevent Zoom from auto-switching microphones.

When to Escalate

Escalate to IT if:

  • Microphone does not work in Zoom AND other apps (FaceTime, Voice Memos)
  • The MacBook microphone does not appear in Sound settings
  • Audio works intermittently after troubleshooting
